Kara Fulton Douglass

Whether you're a prospective parent, teacher, current parent, or a casual browser, we welcome you. We are trying to do something really special for children here at The Fulton School, and we hope it comes through our website as well.

We believe that children are natural learners. This means that teaching them should be a pretty smooth endeavor and, if we’re teaching them well, they will always be engaged in what they’re learning. Children should LOVE school. When they’re young, they should be experiencing what they learn.  As they grow older and things become more abstract, they should connect with what they’re learning. 

Our program grows with your child. From a traditional Montessori environment in early childhood transitioning to a college preparatory program (with a twist!) in the high school, we aim to work with their natural development rather than against it.

Dr. Maria Montessori talked about teaching to the whole child. This means that we consider and acknowledge their social, emotional, and psychological development in addition to their cognitive development.  She hypothesized that if we address all of a student's needs, rather than merely his/her academic needs, that the student would reach a greater potential.  Over a century later, educators know that her hypothesis was correct and it is a major element of our mission at The Fulton School.  We hope to give our students the time and space to grow into the adults they were meant to be. We hope to give them a better childhood.

ABOUT MRS. DOUGLASS
Kara Fulton Douglass started at Chesterfield Day School in 1976 as a toddler, at the same time that her mother, Dr. Barb Fulton, became the CDS Head of School. She graduated from CDS and continued at John Burroughs School in St. Louis. She received her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and German Studies from Rice University, as well as her Master’s in Counseling from Covenant Theological Seminary. She was a Montessori teacher, counselor, and principal at various schools, including The Bullis School in Maryland and Academie Montessori in Belgium before becoming Head of School at The Fulton School in 2008. Douglass currently serves on the board for the Independent Schools of St. Louis (ISSL) and on the Independent Schools Association of the Central States’ (ISACS) Accreditation Review Committee. She is also an instructor of child development with the Hope Montessori Educational Institute.
