Upper Elementary Science Teacher

Chesterfield Day School seeks an educator to join the faculty for the 2015-2016 school year as a full-time upper elementary teacher.

Chesterfield Day School offers an exceptional personalized learning environment in support of our vision: Through meaningful work, Chesterfield Day School students develop fundamental skills, think creatively and critically, identify and solve complex problems of the world, express themselves to the community, and grow in character.

Our engaging and rigorous approach to preparing students is implemented by a collaborative team of subject area specialist teachers in the upper grades. CDS offers a student-teacher ratio of no more than 12:1 in order to allow the faculty to be truly personalized in their approach.

We seek an energetic and intelligent science teacher with a sound understanding of best practices in the teaching and working with this age group of children. This position is designed for a teacher who values curriculum design and implementing a personalized and engaging curriculum. Working with a team of teachers and our Director of Academics and Student Services, this teacher will design his/her classroom environment and program to create a program that allows for creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration. The program will be authentic and meaningful and build character in our students.

Chesterfield Day School has strong commitment to fundamental academic skills while also enhancing and enriching our curriculum. We create opportunities for students not found elsewhere (e.g.: Inquiry Based Learning, Passion Driven Education, Design Thinking, MakerSpace, Web 2.0 Tools, Project Based Learning, Service Learning, LEGO Robotics, STEM or STEAM approaches, and more).

Specific responsibilities associated with this position include:

Delivering a personalized learning experience

Designing innovative, dynamic science units (interdisciplinary, multi-age, inquiry based).

Participating in the design and execution of our annual overnight Outdoor Education experience for 4th, 5th and 6th Grades in the fall

Directing students through an advisory course to develop character, teamwork, and other life skills

The ideal candidate will:

Enjoy spending time with 10-12 year olds

Be flexible, visionary and hard-working

Have a deep interest in science and a vision for how the subject matter can be taught to develop critical thinking and analytic reasoning along with fundamental skill mastery

Have strong communication skills with parents and children

Demonstrate understanding of the educational and social development of children in this age-group

Exhibit a passion for developing, implementing and improving curricula that is informed by best practice and experience

Understand and embrace the role of "customer service" in an independent school

Have knowledge or experience working with LEGO Robotics.

Have interest in the Maker movement and partnering with or leading our MakerSpace.

The program will be authentic and meaningful and build character in our students.

• Developing a humanities (combined language arts and social studies) class that is guided by our mission, vision and curricular standards
• Delivering a personalized learning experience
• Taking part in and delivering our overnight Outdoor Education experience for 5th and 6th Grades, respectively, in the fall

MakerSpace Teacher

MakerSpace Teacher

Chesterfield Day School seeks an educator to join the faculty for the 2015-2016 school year as a part-time MakerSpace teacher with room to grow.

Chesterfield Day School offers an exceptional personalized learning environment in support of our vision: Through meaningful work, Chesterfield Day School students develop fundamental skills, think creatively and critically, identify and solve complex problems of the world, express themselves to the community, and grow in character.

Our engaging and rigorous approach to preparing students is implemented by a collaborative team of subject area specialist teachers in Art, Music, PE, Spanish, Library, and MakerSpace. CDS offers a student-teacher ratio of no more than 12:1 in order to allow the faculty to be truly personalized in their approach.

We seek an energetic and intelligent MakerSpace teacher to work with our Kindergarten through Sixth grade students. This role is an exciting opportunity for a teacher who values curriculum design, the maker movement, hands on learning and understands the importance of a personalized and engaging curriculum for elementary aged children. Working with a team of teachers and our Director of Academics and Student Services, this teacher will design his/her classroom environment and program to create a program that allows for creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration. The program will be authentic and meaningful and build character in our students.

Chesterfield Day School has strong commitment to fundamental academic skills and also a long history of enhancing and enriching our program in many ways. We create opportunities for students not found elsewhere whether that be through Project Based Learning, personalized education, STEM, or Montessori.

Utilizing technologies and hands on tools to provide students with opportunities to iterate, collaborate, take a give feedback, and present their creations to audiences.

Have strong communication skills with parents and children

Demonstrate understanding of the educational and social development of children in this age-group

Have knowledge of or demonstrable aptitude to learn Maker technology tools (Littlebits, Arduino, Scratch, Sphero, Thymio, Squishy Circuits…)

Have knowledge or demonstrable willingness to use diverse materials to create like wood, cardboard, styrofoam, paper mache, metal, programming, etc…

Understand that the role of the MakerSpace teacher will be as a facilitator and champion for learning, and the ability to be comfortable not having all the answers. Interested in utilizing online sources like YouTube, Khan Academy, Pinterest and Twitter to connect students to passionate, knowledgeable people worldwide.
