New this year!! Grades 4-6 SUMMER ACADEMIC PROGRAM
The Summer Academic Program at Chesterfield Day School offers students entering fourth through sixth grades and their families a valuable four-week educational program during the summer to support, enhance, and continue the educational experience already offered at CDS.
Subject areas included in the program are mathematics, reading, and writing.
The math portion utlizes the ALEKS technology program, a comprehensive tool in assessment of matematics skills and computation. The teacher and student will receive feedback as to which facts the student has mastered, which they are working on, and which they have yet to learn. Students will be tested and then given problems to solidify their understanding. An assessment is given at the end of each topic; areas that the student has not yet mastered will be presented again in a new way. The student may proceed to the next topic once the teacher and the ALEKS tool show full understanding of the current unit. Once the program is purchased, the student, teacher, and parent have access to the program for a 12-month period at home or school via the Internet.
The reading portion involves the SRA reading program, an established and effective method for assessing and enhancing reading skills. Students are tested, placed at an appropriate level, challenged to read passages at that level, and guided to demonstrate comprehension or vocabulary and content. Monday through Thursday will be dedicated to the SRA program. Friday's reading class will be spent with literature focussing on discussions of favorite books, oral book reports, and library visits to ensure that each student has books for leisure summer reading.
The writing portion will encourage and enhance the student's natrual flow of writing. Students will maintain a journal, writing details through writing. Fridays will be a free writing day and a time to explore topics that are important to each individual. The first week of writing is designed to promote free writing without instruction. During the second week students will focus on order and structure in their writing, including beginning, middle, and end. The third week will examine sentence structure and vocabulary usage. The last week will focus on grammar and punctuation. All discussions and instruction will utilize the journal entries from students in class as a foundation.
